Chapter 8

“Well, Lenny, what happened?” the boss asked.

“They…they’re on their way back to that lodge. I never could get close enough to know if anybody knew who she was. Nobody seemed to. Mostly they just went in and out of stores, in and out of churches, in and out of art--”

“Okay, that’s enough. Just lay low right now and keep a watch on that lodge the best you can. Just know where she’s at, at all times, okay!”

“Okay, boss. Sure…sure th…thing”

The line went dead once more with a bang, in Lenny’s ear. “We just ain’t getting’ paid enough for this crap,” he said to his sidekick.

Three miles from Pueblo Pass, Clay finally spoke.

“I’m sorry, Hannah. With all that you have facing you, I shouldn’t have made that snide little remark at the art gallery.”

“I’m sorry I got so angry as to not even talk to you. You’re only trying to help me.”

“I didn’t mean to hurt you. I never want to do that.”

“I just can’t believe I am or was that kind of person. The money. I just can’t even imagine spending money like that on art.”

Clay took her hand in his.

“Well, the lady did call you Miss again. Twice actually.”

“Yes she did. Maybe two people in a row know what they’re talking about.”

“I sure hope so,” he said sincerely.

“Do you really, Clay?” she asked skeptically.

“Yes…I really do.” He raised her hand to his lips and kissed her palm, sending little jolts of electricity through her.

“Me too,” she admitted, smiling shyly at him.

“We’ll have to write all this down when we get home.”

“Home. That really sounds nice, doesn’t it,” she said, looking at him with hope in her eyes.

“Yes it does, honey.” He paused, just looking at her. “And then, once we get it down, I’ll talk to Garth. I imagine he’ll take over from here.”

“I wish someone would.” She laughed nervously.

Going up the winding mountain road in the dark was scary for Hannah, but she didn’t say anything. She knew for a fact, after today, that Clay was a competent driver. In no time at all they were at the lodge, and as they got out of the Jeep, Juan met them on the porch.

“Señor Clay. Señorita Hannah,” he greeted. “You have any luck?” the old man asked.

“A little,” Clay replied.

Looking through the doors and not seeing any of the guests, Clay asked, “Where is everybody?”

“They all tired. Fished hard. Ate Juan’s cooking. Go to bed.”

“Even Garth? Mr. Reynolds?”

“Sí.”

“Ill talk to him tomorrow, then.”

“You had supper?”

Clay and Hannah looked at each other.

“As a matter of fact, no,” Clay admitted.

“Come then. I save you some.”

They watched Juan go through the doors.

“We’ll be there in just a minute, Juan,” Clay said. To Hannah he said, “We’ll get through this.” He took her by the shoulders. “Together.”

“I know we will. I’m determined to.”

“Oh, Hannah.” He took her in his arms and hugged her close.

She snuggled next to him, with her cheek against his soft flannel shirt that covered his broad chest, savoring the feel and smell of him in the cool mountain air.
